Toshihiro Komatsu lives and works in Japan. He received B.F.A. (1991) and M.F.A. (1993) from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Japan, and worked at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (1995-1996). In February 1999 he received Master of Science degree in Visual Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. He was selected for a Special Project Program (September - November 1999) at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY. He resides in Kyoto City and teaches at Faculty of Art, Kyoto Seika University, Japan.

His individual exhibitions and projects include Mobile Space and Artist and His Studio, Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (1995, 1996); a site specific installation at Watertoren CHK, Vlissingen, The Netherlands (1996); Herengracht 344, the Gate Foundation, Amsterdam (1996); Inverted Office N51-113, Department of Architecture at MIT, Cambridge (1998); Observatory and Japanese Houses, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York, (1999); Queens Focus 03: Adjoining Spaces, Queens Museum of Art, Queens, New York (2000 - 2001); From Threshold to Threshold, Gallery Artislong, Kyoto City (2004); Clairvoyance Aug.17,2005 and15minutes, TAP2005 Satellite Gallery, Toride City (2005); Clairvoyance Sept.21,2005, galerie16, Kyoto City.

His work was featured in Repeat Reverse, Yale Art and Architecture Building, New Heaven, Connecticut (1997); American Photography Institute exhibition, the gallery of Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, NY (1998); Transposed: Analogs of Built Space, SculptureCenter, New York, New York (2000); American Photography Institute National Graduate Seminar exhibition, Osaka, Japan (2000); O-House, Toride Art Project 2000, Toride City, Japan (2000); Media/Tonic, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Pittsburgh; On Happiness: Contemporary Japanese Photography, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo (2003); Ura Art Map, Kyoto Art Center, Kyoto City (2005); Membrane onto Magic, MOCA Taipei, Taiwan (2005).

He is a recipient of the several awards including the VSB Foundation Grant, the Netherlands (1995); Union Foundation for Ergo-design Culture Grant, Japan (1996, 1997); American Photography Institute Grant (1998); and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2000).
