Emma McCagg
Emma McCaggEmma McCagg is a New York-based artist who works in numerous media though her main focus is a conceptual approach to painting. Recent exhibitions include: All The World is A Stage, Koscielak Gallery, Chicago; Emma McCagg: Hard Copy, Eighth Floor Gallery, NYC; Anthro/Socio, The Artist Network, NYC; The Crystal Land Revisited, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, NJ; The Phantom Limb, Unit B Gallery, Chicago; The Pleasure Dome, Pool, NYC; Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice, Nikolai Fine Art, NYC; Lost In Space, Gary Tatintsian Gallery, NYC; Cheap and Chic, Tatti-O, Mexico City, Mexico. As Emma McCagg is writing in her artistic statement: I consider myself a post-figurative painter. My work mines a variety of sources that push the historical understanding of figurative painting in numerous directions. I rework conceptually the formal strategies associated with current modes of portraiture that emphasize the psychological and emotional states of the subject matter. While historical influences might be Egon Schiele and Andy Warhol, more recent influences would include John Currin and Glen Brown. But I am also interested in fashion photography, advertising, film stills, publicity photos, police mug shots, as well as theatre costume design.
