Gosia Koscielak

Malgorzata – Gosia Koscielak is a curator, gallerist, lecturer and visual artist.

Born in Wroclaw, Poland, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland where she received numerous degrees (MFA'86, MFA'87, PhD'92), and worked as an assistant to Professor Wanda Golkowska. On a Fulbright Scholarship, Koscielak additionally received a MFA in 1994 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

From 1987 to 1989, Koscielak was the Artistic Director of Rekwizytornia Gallery at the Contemporary Theatre in Wroclaw, Poland. Thereafter she began independently curating international exhibitions; the most acclaimed of these exhibitions are Homage a Henryk Stazewski in 1989; Transcultural Visions: Polish - American Contemporary Art at the Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago (2001) and at the National Museum in Szczecin (2002); Crossmediale (2006, 2007); and In Transit (2006).

Koscielak has lectured at the Art Institute of Chicago, St.John Fisher College in Rochester, NY, and has been a visiting lecturer at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Koscielak has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Greece, Holland, Germany, Poland and the US. Her works are in private and museum collections worldwide, including Calgary University; Chelm Museum; the Center for Polish Sculpture in Oronsko; and the Museum of Modern Art in Hunfeld, Germany.

Koscielak’s art draws from the traditions of Polish Minimal and Conceptual art and updates them. Her multimedia installations, paintings and digital graphics center on her lifelong fascination with the phenomena of light. Over the last decade, post-conceptual reflections on the complex relationships between human nature, history, biology, culture and technology have inspired her work.
